Understanding Macros in Fried Chicken

Protein content. The chicken itself is an excellent source of lean protein. Most of the protein in a fried chicken meal comes from the meat. A single piece of chicken breast or tender can provide 20–50g of protein. The coating adds minimal protein.

Carbohydrate content. Carbs in fried chicken come almost entirely from the breading and any sauces. Plain chicken meat contains virtually no carbohydrates. The amount of breading varies significantly between restaurants and items - thicker coatings mean more carbs.

Fat content. Fat is absorbed from the cooking oil during frying. Skin-on pieces absorb more fat than skinless tenders. Cooking temperature and time affect absorption - and different restaurants use different oils and methods, leading to varying fat contents.

Saturated fat. Fried chicken contains saturated fat from both the animal fat in the skin and the cooking oil. The UK government recommends no more than 20g of saturated fat per day for women and 30g for men. A single large fried chicken meal can approach or exceed these limits.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the macros in fried chicken?

Typical fried chicken macros per 100g are approximately 250–350 kcal, 20–28g protein, 10–20g fat, and 5–20g carbohydrates. These vary significantly by coating thickness, frying method, and restaurant.

Is fried chicken high in carbs?

Which UK fried chicken has the best macros for a diet?

Slim Chickens tenders offer the best macro profile for dieting - very high protein, relatively low carbs and fat. KFC chicken pieces are also good value from a macro perspective.

Should I track macros or just calories?

Tracking macros gives you more insight into your nutritional intake than calories alone. For muscle building, protein tracking is particularly important. For weight management, calorie tracking is usually the most effective approach. Our calculators show both.
