Louisiana Rub is one of the more frequently misunderstood options on the Wingstop menu. When I first ordered it, I assumed it would be similar to other Louisiana-inspired options I'd had at different places - a wet, vinegar-forward hot sauce. It's not. Louisiana Rub is a dry rub, and that distinction matters.
What Is Louisiana Rub?
Louisiana Rub at Wingstop is a dry spice blend applied to the wings rather than a wet sauce. The "rub" in the name is literal - the spice mix is rubbed into the surface of the wing rather than tossed in a liquid sauce. This creates a different eating experience: more textured, less sticky, with a more concentrated spice hit per bite.
The flavour profile is based on Cajun and Creole spice traditions from Louisiana. The primary flavours you'll taste are:
- Paprika (smoked and sweet)
- Cayenne pepper (heat)
- Black and white pepper
- Garlic powder
- Onion powder
- Dried thyme and oregano
- Salt
The heat is present but manageable - I'd put it in the medium range. It's more than the Hawaiian or Hickory Smoked BBQ (which both lean sweet), but substantially less than Atomic or Dragon's Breath.
Louisiana Rub Nutrition
From the Wingstop UK nutrition data for Louisiana Rub Wings:
- Calories per wing: 107 kcal
- Protein per wing: 9.8g
- Carbohydrates per wing: 0.4g
- Fat per wing: 7.2g
- Salt per wing: 0.7g
- Sugars per wing: 0.2g
The most notable nutritional characteristic of Louisiana Rub compared to the wet-sauce flavours is the carbohydrate content: just 0.4g per wing with 0.2g of sugars. The sauced flavours (Hawaiian, Mango Habanero, Hickory Smoked BBQ) carry sugars from their sweet sauce components; a dry rub doesn't have this. For people monitoring carbohydrate intake, Louisiana Rub is one of the better flavour choices.
The fat content at 7.2g per wing is mid-high range for the Wingstop flavours - the dry rub does include oil components, and the cooking method adds fat as usual. At 107 kcal per wing, it's towards the upper end of the calorie range but still well within the typical wing calorie band.
Louisiana Rub vs Other Dry Rub Flavours
Wingstop's dry rub options tend to have certain nutritional similarities - lower in sugars, higher in fat relative to the base. Comparing Louisiana Rub to Lemon Pepper (also a dry rub):
- Louisiana Rub: 107 kcal, 9.8g protein, 0.4g carbs, 7.2g fat, 0.7g salt, 0.2g sugars
- Lemon Pepper: 107 kcal, 9.8g protein, 0.3g carbs, 7.2g fat, 0.6g salt, 0.2g sugars
They're almost identical nutritionally. The difference is entirely in the flavour: Louisiana Rub is warm, spiced, and earthy; Lemon Pepper is bright, citrus-forward, and sharp. Both are excellent choices from a nutrition standpoint if you're minimising sugar and carbohydrate intake.
What to Order With Louisiana Rub Wings
Because Louisiana Rub is already spiced, I'd avoid pairing it with another heavily spiced element. Wingstop Style Fries in plain or Wingstop Style seasoning work well as a neutral contrast. Ranch Dip (~83 kcal per 42g serving) cuts through the spice in a satisfying way - the creamy, herb-forward ranch complements the dry rub in the same way as a cooling side would complement a hot curry.
If you're ordering Louisiana Rub and want to build out a full meal calculation, the Wingstop calories calculator will show you the running total as you add items.
Should You Order It?
Louisiana Rub is one of my regular Wingstop orders. The combination of genuine Cajun spice depth, low sugar content, and solid protein per wing (9.8g) makes it a flavour I come back to consistently. It's also a good gateway into the Wingstop dry rub experience for someone who's been ordering wet sauces - the intensity is there without the stickiness.
